Huawei is still suffering from the US-China trade war. The Chinese manufacturer is still not allowed to offer Google apps on its cell phones and Huawei is still only allowed to work with selected suppliers.

How badly Huawei's smartphone business is suffering from this can be seen, among other things, from the fact that Huawei has not presented a flagship device for Europe for a year. Before the Google ban, Huawei always had 2 top devices per year.

The Huawei nova 9

Despite all the efforts to have its own operating system or its own ecosystem, no Huawei cell phone has really been able to gain a foothold on the broad market since the so-called Android ban.

Now the Chinese technology group is trying again and is bringing the Huawei nova 9, which will be presented at a global event in Vienna. The presentation starts at 3:30 p.m. - this article is still being updated.

camera

Huawei puts the focus of the nova 9 on the image quality of the camera. For this, Huawei relies on a quadruple camera, which consists of a 50 MP main camera, wide angle, depth sensor and macro lens.

The camera setup works with 4-in-1 pixel binning. As with earlier devices, the nova 9 uses a RYYB sensor instead of a conventional RGB sensor. According to Huawei, the yellow pixels of the RYYB sensor should be able to capture more light than the green pixels of an RGB sensor.

Both the main and front cameras are supported by image stabilization, which Huawei says is based on AI. There are also two new camera functions, "Extreme Night Shoot" and "Night Selfie Video".

Curved display

While most mobile phone manufacturers have moved away from curved displays, Huawei remains true to this type of screen with the nova 9: The 6.57-inch OLED display extends over the side edges. It looks chic, but is usually associated with unintentional touchscreen touches in everyday use.

In any case, the OLED display has an adaptive refresh rate of 60 or 120 Hz and has a resolution of 1,080 x 2,340 pixels. The screen is also characterized by a small camera hole in which the selfie camera is located. The fingerprint sensor is integrated in the display.

Processor with limitations

In the past, Huawei purchased its in-house Kirin processors from the Taiwanese chip manufacturer TSMC. But this cooperation was banned by the USA. In this respect, it was generally difficult for Huawei to find a suitable chip supplier.

The US government has issued an exception and therefore Huawei may use Snapdragon chips from the US manufacturer Qualcomm, but only the 4G variants.

And so the Huawei nova 9 is equipped with a Snapdragon 778G processor from Qualcomm. The chip only enables LTE connections. 5G is not possible.

Battery with high charging capacity
The nova 9's battery has a capacity of 4,300 mAh and can be charged with a maximum of 66 watts. According to Huawei, the device should be able to be charged from 0 to 100 percent in 38 minutes.

software
As already mentioned, the Huawei nova 9 comes without Google apps. Instead, Huawei's own services are installed on the smartphone. However, the nova 9 does not run on the Huawei HarmonyOS operating system either. Huawei specifies its EMUI 12 as the operating system, which is based on the open version of Android 11.

Huawei regularly highlights the advances made with the in-house ecosystem. Accordingly, the vast majority of popular apps and applications should now be available on Huawei devices.

Availability and price

The Huawei nova 9 will go on sale on November 1st. There it will be available for 499 euros (RRP). The colors available are "Starry Blue" and "Black".
